"People in Europe actually want to hear me play my original music... in the U.S. not all, but most places I play just want a human jukebox." - Tony Spinner

Interview by Randy Mallett

July 2009

Cape Girardeau, MO native Tony Spinner is an accomplished blues singer/songwriter/guitarist and

has toured the world over several times with legendary rock icons Toto and Pat Travers. He's now

touring in support of his solo project, The Tony Spinner Band. Take a moment to check out Tony's

work. You will NOT be disappointed. - R. Mallett

BP: Thanks for taking the time Tony! How have you been?

TS: If I was any better I'd be twins!

BP: I see that you're in between dates right now on your tour (which seems to never

stop). What do you do on your downtime?

TS: Play my guitar!

BP: You've just announced more European dates for later this year. You've done quite

a bit of touring over there right?

TS: Yes.

BP: What's the main difference between touring Europe and touring the U.S.?

TS: People in Europe actually want to hear me play my original music. Here in the U.S. not all, but

most places I play just want a human jukebox.

BP: Are you "bigger" in Europe?

TS: Yes.

BP: Tell us about working with Toto. I'm sure you have tons of stories.

TS: Almost ten years of playing rhythm guitar and backing vocals. I got to see the world, watch some of the greatest musicians in the world and become a better vocalist for sure.

BP: And Pat Travers? That must have been very cool...

TS: The coolest! I have always been a fan of Pat Travers and to play next to him was a wonderful experience.

BP: So you've got a new cd out right?

TS: Yes. It's called "Rollin' And Tumblin'" and is available through my website www.tonyspinner.com and through Grooveyard records.

BP: Where did you record it and who did you work with on it?

TS: We recorded it at my bass players home in Germany. Michel Mulder on bass and Han Neijenhuis on drums.

BP: Do you enjoy your solo career more than working with other bands in the past? And if so, why?

TS: Absolutely! I can play whatever I want, however I want. I am free to express myself completely.

BP: So far in your career, what has been the most rewarding experience for you?

TS: Being able to play my own music and having people actually listening to it without hollering out Freebird, Bob Seger, "Play something I can dance to," etc...

BP: Tony, you've got an extensive discography of work. What keeps you going? What motivates you to keep writing music?

TS: Listening to great music like the original Allman Brothers Band with Duane and Berry or Jimi Hendrix! Wow, what wonderfull inspiration!.

BP: You've got several Cape Girardeau dates lineup up for this year right?

TS: Well, one for sure. Check my website for info and other possible dates.

BP: When you're out on the road, what do you miss most about home?

TS: My wife Sonya!

BP: Do you have time to keep up with the local Cape music scene? If so, who has been some of your favorite area bands in the past several years?

TS: I never get a chance to hear anyone because I just roll in and out of town so fast. In the past though, some of my biggest influences were and are Tommy Koontz, Roger Garland, Alan and Perry Palermo, Eddie Keys, Andy Scholl, George Barron, Paul Knox, Kevin Rellergert, Clay Thomas, David Daniels, Bill Watkins, Mike Smith And The Runaways, and Mark Dillingham just to name a few.

BP: Ok Tony that's it! Thanks again so much for taking the time and we'll see you in Cape soon!

TS: Thanks for your time and let's talk again soon.
