March 2010

Random thoughts during a cold winter day:

Why do U2 get more popular the more they suck? Their albums get worse and

worse, and yet they keep getting bigger and bigger. The "best" band in the world?

Hardly...

I'm convinced that Metallica recorded St.Anger as horribly as they could to prove

that people will buy anything. I loved listening to hardcore Metallica fans try to defend that

album. It's like arguing that your shit smells better than someone else's.

Lady Gaga dresses in extravagant outfits not to hide the fact that she writes bad music, but to

hide the fact that she's just ugly.

You know what I thought about the Superbowl this year? Nothing. I didn't watch it.

I wonder why there are no tribute bands in our area? That fake KISS band got a bigger audience in Cape than any local band ever does.

I still want to start a Huey Lewis cover band. And you know you wanna see it.

But more than that, I wanna be in a kickass blues-rock band. I don't know of anyone else around who can snarl the blues like me. So Bruce, if you're reading this, let's start a band.

...And speaking of blues; Why on earth is rhythm and blues music associated with people like Beyonce and John Legend? That's not R & B...

Government Mule, The Black Crowes, Joe Bonnamassa, THAT is rhythm and blues...

I hope Rockface Barband wins the Pointfest battle and shows St.Louis and The Point that our bands make their bands look like diaper-shitting babies.

Isn't it about time for Papa Aborigine to make a comeback? It's been a long time since I heard a local band do justice to a Doors song.... C'mon Billy, we miss you.

How can a band like Nickelback sell tens of millions of albums, and have tons of hit singles, and have no fans? Everyone hates them, yet they somehow keep making money. Is there a conspiracy at work here, or is this just the Michael Jackson syndrome, where you're all just afraid to admit that you secretly dance around in your underwear to them when no one is looking?

I'm looking forward to all the great rock shows lined up at the Show-Me Center this year... Up first: Rodney Carrington is gonna melt our faces off!

This is the year that Lost Possum will finally reveal the secrets to our success: We were founded "underground" by a group known as the "Illuminati". We've been stealing your children while you sleep, and eating them. We encode hidden messages in our music. We own Rage 103.7. The River City Music Festival was our idea. And yes, mixing half coke, half diet coke will do more for your band than all the stickers and crappy burnt E.P.'s you can leave lying all over town...

We've already succeeded in making lots of people hate us, now it's on to the hit singles and anti-possum facebook groups...

Oh, and those hidden messages?

...old Mr.Wizard episodes from Nickelodeon.

  1. Yo Brock, pithy and trenchant (and funny!!) Thanks for defending R&B from the likes of John Legend and rock from Nicklepuss.

  2. HAHA... hell yes.

  3. I agree 100%! First off The Black Eyed Peas are a perfect example of why I say that Billboard's Top 100 isn't so important anymore. The Black Eyed Peas have been on the top for over 17 weeks, but does that really mean they are the next big thing? In some ways yes, but in reality the top 100 is based on antiquated means which simply do not apply anymore. I mean when was the last time, you went out and bought a single? Gosh do they still make those? And furthermore, when was the last time you were able to call up the Hot Top 40 radio station and actually request a song? These days most stations in that genre outside of major markets are mostly automated. I say these days, the system stinks as much as the tripe the industry passes off for entertainment.

  4. AGREED! Plus I think the Adam Lambert thing was staged. And did anybody else see J-Lo fall on her ass? Haha. I didn't watch it live btw either... saw some internet clips the day after.

  5. This blog should be required reading material for all users of capescene.

  6. I've been saying for years that the fest organizers need to charge admission so they can bring in a good headliner. Even just $5 would go along way and wouldn't hurt attendance. Everybody expects to pay at least that much to see a rock show - especially w/30+ bands on it.

Everybody should check out these bands on the lineup though. Some of these are great bands who've been flying under the radar. Wish I could make it this year, but I'll be spawning offspring around that time. Ok... well... my wife will be. And my interview w/Z95 is that night too... just remembered that.

  7. I read you loud and clear man. I HATE how most (not all) bands in this area are so freaking lazy. I hate the egos and the BS that they spew all over the place. This area has some real talent, but at the same time it is plagued with a bunch of people who think they are owed something because they are ina band.

  8. Really enjoyed the blog! Agreed with pretty much everything you had to say. Except for the Jethro Tull jab. Keep up the good work cause I'm a fan of Lost Possum. By the way new Pearl Jam comes out in Sept.

  9. Helmet = Awesomeness.

  10. This is a tough one, but I remember as a teenager (I'm 29), I loved the RATM song "Bullet In Your Head" (I think was the name of it)....haha, not cause I wanted to shoot someone, but because of the lyrics "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me" that was repeated over and over several times. It was a great 'rebellion' song. To the 'establishment', to the 'man', to 'parents' - FUCK YOU I WON'T DO WHAT YOU TELL ME! haha

Now I'm a responsible adult. Wonder what the hell happened? lol

  11. Brock - I understand your frustration. However, consider the ShowMe Center does not exist as a music venue. It is a multipurpose venue. They have no charter to serve the music community, and in fact promoting concerts is a risky business. This state owned facility is not in the business of taking unnecessary risks - your tax dollars fund the place. Regarding Mr. Ross, while I know him only casually, I do know he has served as the president of IAAM (International Association of Assembly Managers) and has managed to keep the place in the black all these years. Why should Mr. Ross be fired just because some handful of disgruntled local musicians don't care for the concert calendar? The place makes money on gun shows, car shows, and concession sales at sporting events. It's not a concert venue.

Again, I totally understand your frustration, but railing against SMC and calling out David Ross over the lack of concerts will not accomplish anything.

And no, the River Campus will probably never promote rock concerts because that's not what the place is for.

If you want to cause positive change, spend your energy where it might actually get something done. Both of these avenues are a dead end for your cause.

If you are so certain of your talents and abilities, why don't YOU assume the risk of renting one of these venues to promote a show? Do that, and you have something to build on. Otherwise, your comments fall on the community ears at large as mostly sour grapes.

IOW do something about it, rather than just bitching about it. Everyone has complaints but it appears no one is willing to step up to the plate.

  12. You know, I brought up Rage Fest, but the more logical choice should be Real Rock 99.3. Why have they never put together a big show?

And if Rage plays local music, why won't Real Rock? I'd much rather hear a good local band than the F'n Scorpions 10 times a day.

There you go Real Rock. Ban The Scorpions and in their place, play a local band every time.

While I am rambling, let me just add, I think there are a few really great bands around here that get out and play often, and seem to draw a good crowd.

So when you come back at me with the "Yeah, we have a great scene because of blah blah blah" just know that I know that, and what I am saying is, go to a big town.

How many bands are playing in St.Louis on any given night. Sure, we're no St.Louis, but we should have the option to see a band every night of the week if we choose. Not just Thursday thru Sunday.

How many bands in this town would play on a Monday night? Gee, if you're the only band playing that night, chances are you'll get a nice crowd. Why do bands always want the weekend? Makes no sense to me.

That's my point. We have a nice little "scene" here. But I don't want to be in a scene. I want to live in a music town. Why can I never go downtown and see a really great outlaw country band? Or a hip hop show?

There's 2 groups of people you never see downtown much. Rednecks and "Urbans".

They like to drink and have fun, too....

In fact, I bet they'd outdrink any little frat boy any day of the week.

  13. That's what frats and sororities are for... They can raise all kinds of money... How about Bikini car washes for a start? HA HA.

Get sponsors... Talk to PMAC, Shivelbines, etc....

Look at who benefits, and seek them out.

  14. A RageFest would be sweet! Not sure how much $ they'd have to do something like that, but it sure has a nice ring to it...
