"Into the Trees"
Review by J Sohn
September 2009
Every so often a person will stumble upon a band who he or she thinks should be
getting more publicity. The music world is so saturated with crap that it is sometimes
hard to sift through the garbage to find something special and worth keeping. Western
culture is content with being force-fed over-produced, Grammy formulated rubbish,
which disturbs me to no end. Sure there are bands that have similar styles to other
bands, and then there are record label copied recording artists who are put in front of
consumers to sell everything from deodorant to granola bars. I am here to say don’t
stop digging, there are great artists to be seen and heard, they are just being hidden
by the latest version of tight pants and lipstick.
This brings me to Sybris, a band from Chicago; merely a six hour drive away. I had
never heard of them until I saw the opening bands for the Brand New show in October.
So, I had to find out who they were and what they sounded like. I am truly glad that I “found” this
band. They might remind people of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs (only better), or Rilo Kiley (but way more
rockin), or even remind you of bands of yesteryear like Sonic Youth, (only more refined and not so experimental).
Any way you slice it, this band is good. The vocals are smooth and intertwine with the music seamlessly. The songs are well written and you can tell they are thought out; not just thrown together. I am listening to the disc for the third time in a row today. I am really, really digging it. “Oh Man!”, “The Mary”, and “Saint Veronica” are stand outs at the moment, but I am sure more songs will grab me by my ears and demand I take more notice. Check this band out now, because I think they have what it takes to get even bigger. Then you could say you knew about them when… And of course you could say Banned Promotions told you so.
