Health Care Reform, The Kinder Gentler Extortion Racket Or...

Pssst! Hey buddy. Wanna buy some protection?

December, 2009

As you may well know, our esteemed leaders (term used loosely) in congress have

passed their version of a health care reform bill. As expected the democrats

rallied by Pelosi, and other pundits of the left, have managed to push through a

version of health care reform that supposedly offers a cure to the crisis in America

of high health costs... Or does it? I want you to consider for a moment the rhetoric

from both sides of the isle and what is really being debated. (another loose term). Has Pelosi or other congress members actually addressed the high cost of health care, or have they merely played to the Americans on the stage of blame game?

Both sides accuse insurance companies of ruthless tactics we have come to know as denial of preexisting conditions and monopolies which result in outrageous premium costs. However, notice that not many if any at all, have talked about state regulations which are a direct result of special interest groups lobbying for exclusivity in regions and in some cases, even entire states. Who exactly created these laws? I assure you it wasn't Insurance CEO's, it was well paid state legislators. Nuff said there.

Take note also that our congress and senate have not talked about, how mandated coverage laws require us to purchase certain types of insurance which most of us will never use. I am referring to smoking secession programs, alcohol and drug abuse recovery treatments. What about abortion and birth control? Those are two issues which are starkly divided in America by religious views and beliefs. Many Catholics must pay for coverage on treatments that their religion forbids them to consider. Why would our law makers require this? Especially when we take into account one of the tantamount rights we have in America, freedom of religion.

The state requires we purchase certain types of health insurance without consideration to life style, or religious preference. All simply because a few lobbyist and media coverage made a one topic or another popular. Ergo, we now have a law! This is bureaucracy at it's best. Pelosi and even republicans are touting that competition is what is needed, yet, these very same law makers are the ones who created the situation which allows insurance companies to exclusivity to regions or in some cases entire states! We are forbidden to purchase our insurance from anyone or anywhere else but only from the companies which our states require us to.

Insurance companies do not sit back and say...

“...well you know, we will take Utah, but to hell with those sick people in Texas and Missouri, we only want consumers in Utah!”

It doesn't work that way folks. Congress and our other law makers created legislation which from the very start limited our choices. Hence the whole lack of competition thing.

So congress comes up the answer. We will now have competition because, with this bill, there comes a catch. You must participate. If you don't, you will be punished. A fine of up to 250,000 and or 5 years in prison. Now, I just wonder who the US congress has in mind? Well it turns out they thought that through. The IRS and the US Dept Of Justice. Yep that right, the federal agency which does not operate under the premise of innocent until proven guilty, the same agency which does not need a court order to seize our property or send us to jail. Can someone explain to me, how America goes from “We need lower cost health care” and “People dying in the streets crisis” to “Oh... The IRS is going to enforce health care reform”?

President Obama agrees that punishment for not participating is appropriate. Although he assures us, that the bill has made provisions to make sure we are not going to police up the poor folks who can't afford to pay. How tender is that? So sweet how the government always has our back aint it? No understand something, once the IRS has this power, there is NO turning back folks. NO matter how much Senator Lieberman and other senate members may balk, if they do not rid the entire bill of any clause which empowers the federal agencies like the IRS, health care reform is not going to be any sort of reform at all. It will be yet another means in which the government obtains revenue, and yet another issue which politicians will use as a platform to make promises from. Create the problem then promise to fix it if elected.

It sounds like a plot from a cheap mobster movie.

Mobster Goon: “Hey buddy! You wanna buy some protection?”

Man: “Protection from what?”

Mobster Goon: “From this.... (SFX smash to the nose with brass knuckles) CRACK!”

If I call this insane is that over the top? I for one, don't think so.

Like I always say, I can count on the left wing liberals to push bad ideas, and the republicans to act like it's their fault. This is bad legislation people, we know it, the President knows it, and even Pelosi knows it. It's just that the democrat party has been high-jacked by the socialist democrats and this bill will be passed whether we need it or not. It will be done this way or this democratic controlled senate and congress will force you to when they turn the IRS monster loose.

Tell me does this sound like liberty to you? Or for that matter, health care reform?

Where is the competition? How does IRS agents enforcing participation equate to lower health care cost?

Look, if congress really wants to help us out here, first off stop teasing the 800 lbs gorilla! (aka the Internal Revenue Service) and resend all state regulations which prohibit Americans from shopping across state lines for insurance. Remove all mandated coverage laws which force us to buy insurance for treatments most of us will never use, much less need. Stop taxing American's hard earned income and let us decide where we want insurance, and how. Here is a bold thought, what if congress actually gave that whole free enterprise society thing we learned about in the 8th grade a try? I's just saying.

A study done by the Cato Institute shows that if we did away with state regulations and restrictions on where and what health insurance available, couple that with new laws which prohibit denial of coverage based on preexisting conditions, there could be as many as 15 million additional Americans who wold have access to better health care insurance. Now if our leaders really want to go for the gusto, and repeal tax laws, we would really be onto something. But hey, what do I know? I'm just a guy who bought into that whole “Let Freedom Ring” thing.

  1. Well I won't be so bold as to speak for all libertarians, but I for one, take pride in that fact that what others may lable as complaining, is in fact simply higher standards.

Another little tid bit I tend to bit more over zealous than others is that little thing we call freedom of speech.

Like I always say, democrats want to be our mother, and republicans want to be our father, libertarians just want the government to treat us like we are adults.

  2. Oh you Libertarians.......you want to live in a perfect world but there is no such thing. The only way your system will work is if "everyone" (meaning every American in the U.S.) plays nice, no greed, no lying, no cheating. Ain't gonna happen. You are the same as everyone else, you complain, but you ain't changin' a thing.

  3. Welcome Rex! Great blog buddy.
