Pretty Mary
(Experimental Art Rock / Cape Girardeau, MO)
Interview with Brad Bollwerk
Interview by J Sohn
February 2010
Q. So, how did Pretty Mary come about and who are the members of the band?
A. Cole Blanton and I (Brad Bollwerk) have been playing since early 2007. Cole being
my step-son, I began showing him how to play bass at the age of 12. He came natural
at it. I'm a self-taught guitarist and vocalist from the age of 15. Cole and I jammed with
the use of a keyboard for drums for a year. Then grabbed now 15 year old drummer
Nik Scarpaci. He holds down the beats nicely.
Q. So, who is Mary and is she pretty?
A. The name Pretty Mary derived from words we liked, that were just plucked out of a
brainstorm cloud. I have painted Pretty Mary (right) and she is our band logo.
Q. Tell us about your sound. How would you describe it for someone who hasn't
heard you before?
A. Our sound is definitely experimental art rock. The music may seem a little dark, but
it always keeps an upbeat tempo to entertain the fans' dancing needs.
Q. Who would you say has been the biggest influence on you as an individual, both musically
and non-musical?
A. I myself have two major influences. Ween, simply for their originality and talent. Second, my deceased older brother Dan. Dan was and still is my idol. Great guitarist and instrumentalist. He inspired me to dig a new path and play my own style of music , with my own feelings and my own words like real music should be. For him, I cover one of his songs "Just Be My Friend". (Non-musically) Art. I have a degree in Fine Art. I'm a painter and drawer. I do linear abstractions of the human figure.
Q. What can we find you listening to these days?
A. I listen to a lot of Big Business, Hank Williams III, Tomahawk and Failure.
Q. What are some long-term and short-term goals for Pretty Mary as a band?
A. Short term - we would love to re-record our album with some new songs and also record them with our new drummer. On our first cd " Normal and Formal" I played drums and guitars myself. It would be fun to record a live session. Long term goals - like every band, getting signed and going on a nation or worldwide tour!
Q. When it comes to song writing, do you write music for lyrics you already have, write the music first, or a little of both?
A. When it comes to writing music, the music always comes first. I'm an instrumentalist so my lyrics come from how that music makes me feel.
Q. I know you are a pretty good artist and even did some special artwork for your most recent show. Can we expect more things like that in the future?
A. Once an artist always an artist. I will have a new original concert poster flat for sale at every Pretty Mary show. I have also joined a hard rock group named Anonymous Plague where I will try to expand my artwork.
Q. Alright.. no more questions, just say what you want, plug the band, say hi to long lost friends, or just tell us what the weather is going to be like on September 23, 2078.
A. We as a band enjoy playing new music. We like setting up our gear at a random place, no specific time, and rock out 'til the police murder our beautiful sound. We look forward to our show March 26th with Anonymous Plague at the Mississippi Mud House in Cape Girardeau. And Pretty Mary looks forward to seeing fans pack the Mud House.
