band - Maelstrom 8.14.07 interview w/Matt, Michael, Daniel, Nathan, Mitch
BP: Hey guys, how's it going?
Maelstrom: Goo...
BP: Umm ok, lol. Let's make the rounds and introduce each member of the group.
Maelstrom: Matt-guitar, Michael-guitar, Daniel-vocals, Nathan-6 string, bass Mitch-Drums.
BP: So, is Maelstrom pumped for Metal Madness?
Maelstrom: Everyone but Matt, who would rather drink beer at a neighborday.
BP: Well, back in April, the band performed at Metalfest @ the Manhattan Room (Banned Promotions' first show). You definitely turned some heads, including mine. How was the show from your point of view? (I was too busy cleaning up broken glass and spilled water, lol).
Maelstrom: Great crowd, really energetic.
BP: Yeah, you really had a great mosh pit going there a few times. What goes through your mind when you're on stage and people are moshing to your music?
Maelstrom: We live to make people mosh, and then die. Cause much ruckus.
BP: We can't wait to see you guys at MM2! Ok, let's get some history out of the way. I know the band hasn't been together for too awfully long. Tell me how and when the band was formed, and who's fault it was? hehe j/k
Maelstrom: Three bands came into one. Matt and Mitch from Tranquill Lake, Daniel and Nathan from Ireyerta, Michael from Nothing Ellis 3.5. Collectively, we've been playing for about a year.
BP: Who are some of your personal influences as a musician?
Maelstrom: African American field hollers, Seal, Ireyeta, Weather Report, Mary Ann Maloney, Tranquill Lake, Bob Sagget, Yichrana IX, Yichrana X, Metallica, Megadeth, Fallout Boy, Warner Brothers Presents: Batman, starring Michael Keaton, Camel Pants, FLAVOR FLAV!!!!!!
BP: Why the name "Maelstrom"?
Maelstrom: Why not the name Maelstrom?
BP: Hmm...good point. I see the reasoning there. Ok, Banned Promotions had a press release a few weeks ago announcing that we have added Maelstrom to our roster. First off, congrats on that. Secondly, you're gonna make us look good right? haha
Maelstrom: First of all, thanks for the add. Of course we will make you look good, perhaps even sexy.
BP: You'd have play your ass off to make me look sexy, haha. Let's delve into the music a bit shall we? Your music is pretty technical, it's fast (blast beats and such), and extremely challenging to play I assume. Why the brutality? Why not play something easy, like alternative rock?
Maelstrom: We all come from a very deep Viking heritage. Everything we do is brutal.
BP: What genre or subgenre should the band be classified under in your opinion?
Maelstrom: Jubblin Core.
BP: Ok, I know a few of you guys also play in the band Ireyerta (another BP band). Tell us who, and how you coincide everything - regarding practices, shows, etc.
Maelstrom: Nathan and Daniel play for Ireyerta. They just try to do both at the same time.
BP: The two bands' music is somewhat similar. What are the obvious differences between Ireyerta and
Maelstrom?
Maelstrom: The guitarist and drummer are different people. Maelstrom's more progressive. Ireyerta steals riffs from Maelstrom. j/k
BP: Alright, anything else you want to throw out there?
Maelstrom: Soon we will have a demo, then Maelstrom will truly be unleashed on the world.
BP: Thanks so much for the interview fellas.....
Maelstrom: Thank you sir, may I have another?
