band - Bare the Betrayal 12.25.06 interview w/Dylan Harris
BP: How goes it? Thanks for taking the time to do this interview during the holidays. And
Merry Christmas by the way!
DH: Your welcome and Merry Christmas to you too.
BP: First off, introduce yourself and tell us what you do in the band.
DH: I am Dylan Harris and I am the lead guitarist.
BP: Alright, you guys are pretty young if I'm not mistaken. How old are all of you?
DH: Tricky question since we're getting new members for the new year, but for this present
album you have me at 17, Josh May on bass at 17, Nick Lambert on vocals at 16, and Jon
Stevens on drums at 18.
BP: Not that age means alot, but the reason I ask is you guys are pretty talented to be that young. How long have you been playing together as a group?
DH: We have been together for about a year and a half. We originated in July '05.
BP: I know a few of you are from New Madrid, and one or two from Sikeston. Did you guys hook up at high school or something?
DH: Yeah kinda. Jon, Josh, and I all three attended NMCC together and have known each other our whole lives pretty much. We all knew we each played seperate instruments, so we decided to start a band. Well, we had the music, but needed a singer. So I called upon a friend of mine, Nick, that I played baseball with in Sikeston. He told me he could sing/scream. Therefore he came down for an audition and hes been around ever since.
BP: Tell me about your last recordings. I've got the cd, and it sounds killer!
DH: Let's see. We recorded in July '06, just one year after we started, at a place called "Earth Sound Studios" in Paducah, KY. We searched and searched for a studio with affordable prices for our small budget, but could get a good quality also. Luckily we found these guys. They did some great work with this cd. The owner/producer, Daniel Woehlke, and actually did some singing with Jacob's Dream on Metal Blade Records. So the guy had some experience with music. His studio was very nice and was like a museum. I got to play on one of Slash's and Jimi Hendrix's actual amps that they played on. Daniel "has his connections" is what he tells us, about getting a hold of the dream rigs.
BP: After hearing the cd - I gotta know, what inspired the band to put those weird, soft breakdowns in alot of the songs? I said to myself "they're out of place, but it's perfect." Is that what you were going for?
DH: I'm glad you brought that up. That is exactly what we were going for. We want to keep our audience on their toes. We want to throw something at them that is totally different than what they've been hearing, but still sounds good. This is how we are trying to declare our independence to the rest of music.
BP: Tell me how the band has progressed since your creation.
DH: Let me just tell you, our next cd will be a full length and full of so many combinations of genres that it will drive you crazy. And with new additions Holden McClung, former drummer for Tevik, and Corey Sevic, former guitarist for Driven to Her Death and Falcon Drive, The new material is going to be far from failure. These two guys carry so much experience and talent.
BP: Explain to me what Bare the Betrayal will sound like 10 years from now.
DH: In 10 years, Bare the Betrayal will stick to the Metal/Hardcore genre, but the music will be so instrumental and amazing. I have a feeling that if we can stick together for 10 years, we should be on the road for success.
BP: Would you rather put out a hardcore metal album that makes $1,000 or a pop-rock acoustic album that makes $1,000,000?
DH: Im speaking for everyone on this, we'd rather keep making metal hardcore long before making a pop-rock album, simply because of how fun it is to play and put on shows. To this day, I still haven't done anything that was more fun that having a successful show. The adrenaline you get pumping is crazy. But, if it ever actually came down to it, I would definitely have to stop and think out my options.
BP: Haha, ok that question was unfair - back to the cd. When listening to it, I couldn't help but to hear a little Trivium in there. Is that one of the band's influences?
DH: Yes, But our major influence to the first album was probably As I Lay Dying.
BP: If you could forecast the perfect year for Bare the Betrayal in 2007 - and you couldn't sign a record deal - what would it be?
DH: We've always talked about just opening for a huge band. So the perfect year would include opening for a huge band. It would also include a succesfull cd, and simply no band/personal issues.
BP: Tell me about your live shows. What message, if any, does the band try to convey?
DH: Haha, I guess our message we send everytime is to just rock out. We dont care if you like us or not, But your there to hear some music and rock, so just fucking do it!!
BP: Ok, how about your lyrics. Any messages to the masses there, or just words for the music?
DH: I have really only read the lyrics to a few of our songs, But I always ask Nick what it is about and where the title came from. Nick always tells me, "It was just what I was thinking about at the time, you all made me write the lyrics." Sometimes it's about issues, the world, maybe a girl or friend. And he'll always end by telling me "It's just whatever man."
BP: Alright, here's your easy one. Tell us about any shows you have coming up, or any news about the band that we haven't mentioned.
DH: We have only 2 upcoming shows, because we are trying not to book too many with the new band members still catching up. They all have like 10 songs to learn, so we're giving them their time. The 2 shows are January 12 at the Manhattan Room, which is Jon's last show he will be playing with us. And the other show is Metrofest IV, July, 27 2007 at Metropolis, IL. It is a battle of the bands in which we placed 3rd this past year against like 9 bands I think. And other than that, just keep a look out for new shows after January to check out the new sound and band members. We will hopefully be having some T-shirts and new cd's by next summer.
BP: Thanks bro, you guys rock. Hope to see you tearing off some faces soon!
DH: Thank you too. And I hope to see us tearing off some faces as well!
